Scouts - Bottle Collection

Rushden District Cub Scouts 5th - 12th January 1974

Returnable Bottle Hunt

To help solve a national bottle shortage the Rushden District Cubs Scouts set out to collect as many returnable bottles as they could in the above week.

In their arrangements approximately 200 cubs were asked to deliver 20 letters to their neighbouring homes appealing for "returnable" bottles.

It was considered that a possible 4,000 homes could be targeted and should each home produce 5 bottles this would bring in 20,000 bottles. And if for each one we could raise 2½ pence the district would raise £500.

Unfortunately the aim was not achieved.

However 57 boys took part collecting 3,650 bottles. These were stored and sorted in the District's Headquarters on Skinners Hill and taken to various traders. After printing costs of £21.78 for 5,000 Leaflets, £52.34 was raised for District Funds.

The Highest collector was Cub Scout Weeks of the 6th Rushden (Alfred Street) Pack and the average was 59 bottles per cub.

Most popular after the beer bottles were the Corona bottles 700, Whites Lemonade 300 & Coke 200.

Chemists also asked for medicine bottles to be collected and Bill Steele, the Higham Ferrers chemist, paid us £10.50.
