The Rushden Echo and Argus, 13th January, 1950, transcribed by Jim Hollis
Rejects Club
Ladder Climb to Youth Home
THERE used to be an old loft above premises on the corner of Moor Road, Rushden, remarkable for nothing except that it once housed rabbits. Technically speaking it is still there, but it has been transformed into a spacious meeting room after many evenings of hard work.

The loft was discovered by members of the Rejects Club after a door-to-door search for a room for their Sunday night meetings.

For the first three months of the club’s existence the members met in a room in a private house, but as the numbers increased it became clear that it was impossible to continue here, so the hunt for new headquarters began.

As soon as they saw the inside of the loft, they realised its possibilities and had no hesitation in renting it. The girls put their aprons on and started on the scrubbing, the boys took tools and began patching-up the walls and touching-up the ceiling.

Cream distemper took the place of grimy whitewash, and before long the room began to take on an altogether different appearance. Electric and gas fittings were extended, and the job was nearly done.

Curtains are almost finished, and now the only thing still to be done is the provision of furnishings. Chairs, tables and rugs will finish off the work.

Club members hope to be able to move into their new “home” on Sunday – but there is just one point; the girls will not go to the meetings in their nylons, for the room is reached by a steep ladder with one rung missing.
