Rushden Query Motor Club

Sidney Hawkes, nephew of Fred Hawkes, was a chartered secretary
and joined his unlce's company in 1928, becoming a director.

An untitled poem by Sidney Hawkes

The first run of the social season
Found riders dry but chilly
Thanks to the good tea at the Hut
They thought this life was hilly.

To Syston Park one morn we went
Our lads thought they were racing
Poor B.S.A. could not keep up
And spent the day us chasing.

Some lads of ours had found a spot
Where they would have a hill climb
Said they the slowest ones shall win
But all rode fast - to time.

Some roughish members fixed a scramble
On Sunday wished to hold it
The police said no you must not go
We cannot well condole it.

(May) The first Road Trial was a great success
Riders turned up in numbers
The first three places went to bikes
Fellows dream of in slumbers.

A grass hill club brought forth a crowd
A turnout of over eighty
The thrill of the day was the old A.J.
Double load was certainly weighty.

A treasure hunt was staged by some
The R100 was competing
To signposts near and far it led
Old Warden was the meeting.

Then with chalky knees they went that night
Query – had they blundered
But when they saw that crowd
They counted up ’er six hundred.
