The Story of 'Carousel'
1893 A.D., a carousel in a New England amusement park turns to the music of the "Carousel Waltz". Park owner Mrs Mullin glares at her rough, tough "barker", Billy Bigelow, who is making up to Julie a local millgirl who is at the park with her friend Carrie. Although Mullin grows by the second, the only sound is that of the carousel music as the scene is in mime.
Mrs Mullin's tongue lashes Julie and Carrie as they leave the park, and when Billy, in his rough fashion defends them - she fires him! Julie comforts him and loves him but when mill owner Bascombe sees her with Billy, she too is fired!!
Despite their ill-fortune, the lovebirds marry and set up home with Julie's cousin Nettie Fowler, but Billy sinks lower and lower, physically abusing Julie on his way down. He takes up with a thieving sailor, Jigger Craigin, who asks him to help him rob Mr Bascombe, Billy resists until Julie tells him she is pregnant, then, wanting the best for his child, he agrees.
Jigger and Billy bungle the robbery. Jigger runs away but Billy knowing he has brought shame and sorrow to Julie and his unborn child, stabs himself to death. Dying, he is visited by a mysterious stranger, visible only to Billy, who takes him to "live" among the starkeepers for all eternity.
However, we are privileged to see this is not the end for Billy, who not only gets to see and hear his lovely daughter from "up there" but is granted visiting privileges during which he learns the words of a life-saving song - "You'll Never Walk Alone."

President's Message
Rushden Operatic Society's success over the years has been due not only to the talent and enthusiasm of its members, but also to the efficiency and commitment of its officials.
The A.G.M. in September saw a change of Chairman and Secretary. I am pleased therefore of having this opportunity of "publically" thanking Mike Neville for his sterling leadership as Chairman for the past 4 years and John Jones, a most efficient and painstaking Secretary for many years.
How fortunate the Society is in having such excellent replacements in Chairman, Keith Green and Secretary Pam Trainor.
To you all - welcome to "Carousel" - your support is great encouragement to the new officials and indeed to all members of Rushden Amateur Operatic Society.
Thank you most sincerely

Bert Catlin
President

Chairman's Message
Firstly may I say with all sincerity, the honour I feel being elected Chairman of the Rushden Amateur Operatic Society.
On behalf of the Committee, I extend a very warm welcome to you, to 'Carousel' - our first major Autumn Production since the society performed 'The Sound of Music' in 1970.
My predecessor - Mike Neville - said in his speech before the final curtain of 'Hello Dolly' - 'Carousel' was to be our Spring Production for 1985. After much thought, it was decided to move the Society's major production to the Autumn.
Singing rehearsals have taken place during the summer under the direction of Pauline Longland, our Musical Director.
The cast have enjoyed working with our professional Producer, Dorothy Clark, and trust she has enjoyed her visit to Rushden.
Sally Jones returns to us as Ballet Mistress - a position she held in 1982 for our production of 'Fiddler On The Roof'.
There are many familiar faces in our cast. It is a great delight to see Angela Newcombe back to play 'Julie Jordan', and Jonathan Reynolds as 'Billy Bigelow'. Jonathan, a newcomer to the Society and Finedon Pantomime Society.
Julie Wilbur plays 'Carrie' opposite myself as 'Mr. Snow'. 'Nettie Fowler' by Muriel and 'Mrs. Mullin' by our good friend Pauline Wildman.
With all these ingredients, I'm sure you will have an enjoyable evening.
Thank you for your continued support and hope to see you again in 1985.

Keith Green

Our Producer - Dorothy Clark
Dorothy Clark Operatic Carousel 1985
Our Producer – Dorothy Clark started her stage experience at the age of five, and has led a very varied and active life connected with the stage.
She has taken leading roles in Musicals and Plays with Societies in North London and the Home Counties.
Dorothy has sung professionally in the London area and also for the B.B.C.
For a number of years, she managed a Theatre School, which involved writing, producing and Stage Managing many shows.  In her spare time – which must have been difficult to find – managed a Folk Group and taught Drama in County Youth Clubs.
Her aim is for a very high standard, not only from herself, but also from those taking part in her productions.  Her philosophy being that in ‘The Old Days’ amateurs could ‘Get away with it’ but not today, when the public has to pay high prices for seats.  They deserve the best it is possible to give with the resources and material available.
Being an approved N.O.D.A. Producer, Dorothy’s talents are in great demand all over the country.
‘Carousel’ is one of her favourite Musicals and has enjoyed working with the cast of Rushden Amateur Operatic Society.
