Horticultural, Ornithological,
& Canine Society

Unidentified newsclip, possibly from The Argus, c1897

Rushden Horticultural, Ornithological, & Canine Society.

This society held its second annual exhibition on Feast Monday and Tuesday at the National Schools. This is the second exhibition held by the society; it will be remembered that last year the society were very unfortunate owing to the weather, and therefore provision was made against this by holding the show indoors. This year the society have added classes for the canine species, and there were some very good exhibits in this class by local dog fanciers. In this class, in addition to the ordinary prizes, were offered several specials, and the, same remark applies to the poultry, pigeons, cage birds, and rabbit classes. The dogs were located in one of the class-rooms, as were also the poultry, while the floral and vegetable section of the exhibition were established in the large schoolroom. In the centre were stands of exhibits (not for competition) from Mr. Charles Watkin, of Wellingborough, Messrs. H., E., & W. Lack, of Wellingborough, and Mr. J. Seckington. These three stands the judges (Messrs. G. Hillburn and T. Perkins) wished to be specially mentioned, including as they did some splendid specimens of ferns and flowering plants. The vegetable, world was well represented, many of the exhibits being very fine, and amongst the fruit we noticed some splendid outdoor grapes, which were exhibited by Mr. Wheeler, of Church-street. Some splendid specimens of dahlias and marigolds were shown. Messrs. Yarde and Co. also had a choice selection on view. The arrangements for the show were carried out by the following committee:— Messrs. J. Seckington, J. Lewis, Wm. Clarke, C. Lewis, T. Lack, S. Robinson, Thomas Willmott, Joseph Darnell, J. Litchfield, sen., J. Litchfield, jun., F. W. Keywood, G. Norman, T. Clarke, and A. Wills. Mr. J. Claridge and Mr. J. T. Scott acted as secretaries. The following are the awards. [missing from the clip]
