10th Rushden Denfield Guides

The Guides started in January 1983 with Julie Coleman as Guider-in-charge and I was her assistant. Our first four Guides were Teresa Allen, Nicola Adams, Esther McClennon and Claire Peters. Subs were 15p per week. The company grew steadily and by September of 1983 we had two patrols with five Guides in each. The company took part in many District activities over the years e.g. District camps, carnival parades, sports evenings. I took my Health and First Aid Certificates and went to Guide camps as First aider with 2nd Rushden St Mary's Guides. The arrangement was that if I went as First Aider my Guides had the opportunity to go on week camps as well as weekend ones with them.

I cannot remember when Julie left and I took over with the help of a Young Leader called Jenny. The Guides we had came from 10th Rushden (Denfield Park) Brownies which was run by Petina (Tina) Alderman who now runs the Animal Rescue Centre. When the Brownie Pack folded our numbers gradually decreased as we had no new Guides moving up to us.

The Guide Company closed in July 1989 due to the fact that there was no one to take it on with so few Guides and I was expecting a baby in October. The remaining Guides joined Paddy (Vicki Payne nee Crook) at 2nd Rushden St Mary's Guides. As a final farewell Dick (my husband) and I took the remaining Guides to Alton Towers for the day. I remember they all enjoyed themselves on the rides while I stood and looked after the bags.

The first Guide to be enrolled in the company was Esther McClennon. Marie Burton heard her make the Promise at the District Camp at Hinwick House in 1983.
