Jim, on bike, fixed holiday problem

Fifteen-year-old Jimmy Flanders cycled off from his home, 77, St. Margaret’s Avenue, Rushden, last Saturday morning on his way to Yarmouth. His mission was to fix up holiday accommodation for his parents, whose efforts during the last few weeks had been unsuccessful.

Under normal circumstances the booking would have been made earlier in the year, but an illness to Mrs. Flanders made that impossible. When it was learned that she would be fit for holiday travel the family immediately set about writing away for accommodation.

Jimmy set off from home at 3.15 on Saturday morning and arrived at South Denes – about two miles from Yarmouth – at 11.30. He was unsuccessful in booking a caravan, so he cycled into Yarmouth, where he was lucky at a boarding house.

By the time he set off on the return journey at 2.30p.m., six-footer Jimmy had had lunch and enjoyed two rides on the scenic railway. He arrived home just after 11p.m.

Cycling is a hobby with Jimmy and he thinks nothing of riding a hundred or more miles on a Saturday. When he is not on his racing bike he is usually swimming, playing tennis or cricket, or ringing bells at St. Mary’s Church. He left Wellingborough Technical College at the end of last term and started work as an apprentice draughtsman this week.
