New Boxing Club At Rushden

Over at Rushden the newest boxing club on the county scene is building rapidly and training every Tuesday and Thursday at the Rushden Athletic Club in Newton Rd starting at 7.30 pm.

The Athletic Club have kindly allowed the boxers to use one of their upstairs halls free of charge and boys from 12 upwards will be welcome.

Jim Lawless is the man in charge and coaching is under the expert guidance of the former Amateur Boxing Association light flyweight finalist Lee Skevington. Former Rushden boxer Roger Hopfield is club secretary and the return of boxing to Rushden has lured back one of the most experienced of the locals.

Dick Rogers, once a top boxer and Far East Land Forces champion became a leading referee and also helped run the last Rushden club. And Dick has another claim to local fame – he was the first boxer ever to represent the Northampton ABA when it was formed in 1953.

Were you one of the boys who used this club? If so, we would be glad to hear from you.
