Boxing Smart Bouts at a Rushden Club
A very successful and well-attended boxing tournament took place at the Rushden Athletic Club on Monday evening.
Fred Jones, of Rushden, a coming boxing, met Jack Hills, of Brighton. This provided some splendid sport, both men displaying considerable skill, and each showing that he “has a punch.” The Brighton lad was knocked out, after a game display, in the fifth round.
Frank Minney, of Rushden, knocked out Pte. Whiting, (R.E.’s) in the first round; and George Miller (Rushden) handed a similar fate to King, of Wellingborough, in the second round.
Mr. Whitehead put up a purse for Minney and King, and the former put King out for the count in the first round.
The 10-stone competition produced four good meetings, and was won by Salisbury, if Irchester.
Mr. Whitehead was the judge; Mr. Longland timekeeper; and Mr. Harry Knight M.C.
