Rushden Echo, Friday October 7, 1898 transcribed Sue Manton

Rushden Allotments Association – A quarterly meeting of this association was held on Wednesday night at the Coffee Tavern. Mr. Partridge presided and among those also present were Messrs. Goodwin, Hornsby, MacDonald, Attley, Reynolds, Woods and Harlow, with the secretary (Mr. W. Gutteridge.) the following members were admitted:-

W. Clarke, Cromwell Road; Wm. Reynolds, Glassbrook Road. Robert Howard, 92 Cromwell Road, George E. Childs, Cromwell Road, Charles Childs 57, Little Street; Thos. Wiggins, Cromwell Road; C. Sanders, Wellingborough Road; Frederick Alderman, Queen’s Terrace; W. Denton, 8 the Orchard; James Wood 118 Wellingborough Road; E. Copson, Duck Street; J. B. Page, Wellingborough Road; Chas Church, Orchard Cottages.-Complaints were made by one or two members with regard to the condition of the land of one or two other members, and it was stated that great annoyance had been caused through seeds of weeds being blown about on other plots. It was decided to serve notices on one or two offenders in this respect. – Mr. Hornby thought it would be well to acquaint the members with what the committee were doing with regard to the land they had in hand. The committee had had nine and a half acres on hand, but now they had only eight acres, for they had let an acre and a half in Short Stocks. Henry’s Close they sowed with wheat, tares and oats and the crops sold for about £41. After the tares were off, the ground was well turned up and he believed, it was now practically clean. The committee had decided this year to plant 3 acres with wheat and 3 acres with tares. He believed there would be a surplus of £10 or £13 on the committee’s farming. (Cheers) the land was easily worth £2 an acre more than it was 2 years ago. (Cheers)
