Cup and Prizes Presented

Athletic Club Gathering


The annual distribution of prizes and a B.S.A. Air Gun Cup, in connection with the Rushden and District Air Gun League, took place at the Athletic Club on  Saturday. Councillor T. F. B.  Newberry, who presided, proposed the toast of the league, and Mr. A. E. Watson of the Wellingborough Working  Men’s  Club, replied.

Mr. Newberry then presented the B.S.A. Airgun Cup to the winners, The Rushden Athletic Club, and gold medals. To the team – Messrs. F. Dickens (captain), W. Line (vice-captain), H. Watts, A. E. Parnell, C. Whitworth, W. Burgess, S. Johnson, W. Bland, W. E. Denton, F. Cross and S. Sanders. The
Runners up, the Irthlingborough Working Men's Club, received a prize of £2. Mr. F. Dickens, the best average shot in the league, was presented with an air gun rifle given by Mr. Newberry for the averages 31 and 10 for 16 matches. Mr. H. Ward of the Irthlingborough W. M. Club, received a prize given by Mr. J. Neville; Mr. F. Sharman of the Rushden Windmill Club, as fourth with a prize given by Mr. W. Danby; and Mr. E. J. Burgess, as fifth, with a prize given by Mr. F. Tassell.

Prizes were also awarded to the two best shots in each team – Rushden Band Club, Messrs. F. Sharman and F. Martin and B. Bayes (tie); Finedon Allen-road Club, Messrs. L. Desborough and S. Rochester; Wellingborough W. M. Club, Messrs. E. J. Burgess and A. Watson; Rothwell W. M. Club, Messrs. A. Wells and F. Covington; Irchester W. M. Club, Messrs. W. Allen and A. Inwood; Wellingborough Ex-Service Club, Messrs. T. Woolsey and S. Ploghman.

The secretary, Mr. J. T. Knighton, gave a report of the season’s work and explained the league’s gratitude to the president for the support he had given, also for the gift of the air-gun, the vice-presidents for their help, and the B.S.A. Company for their cup and special prize.

A vote of thanks to the Athletic Club was proposed and Mr. G. Childs (games secretary) replied. He said they were willing at any time to give support to their fellow club members. Mr. Newbcrry responded to a vote of thanks proposed by Mr. A. E. Watson. The evening concluded with a shooting match between the winners of the league and the Rest of the League teams, the latter winning by 2 points.
