Rushden Boy Scouts - Shilling Fund
The Rushden Troop of Boy Scouts has been in existence for the last six years, during which time excellent work has been done in the training of the youths. The time has now come when an appeal has to be made to the public of Rushden for contributions towards the funds of the Troop. Many boys seeking admission into the Rushden Troop have reluctantly had to be refused because of the equipment and accommodation being inadequate to allow of more Scouts being enrolled, and it is now hoped to remedy this state of things through the generous gifts of the public.

During the present War the Rushden Troop of Boy Scouts have rendered valuable service as guarding the telegraph wires along the Bedford Road and in many other capacities; and there can be no doubt that, as the War proceeds, still further work will be placed upon them. It is important therefore, that the membership and equipment of the Troop should be strengthened.

Amounts of 1s. and upwards or even small donations—will be gratefully received.

F E Preston,
Scoutmaster.

Rushden Echo & Argus, 7th July 1922, transcribed by Kay Collins

Stanwick—Boy Scouts—Last night there was great interest in the village when a number of boys became members of the great band of Scouts. The Rushden Troop, under the guidance of District Scoutmaster F E Preston, Scoutmaster G Fountain, and Assistant Scoutmaster B Houghton marched to the village, headed by their bugle band. The ceremony was to have taken place in the Vicarage garden, but as the weather was fickle the scouts and friends assembled in the Church room. The 19 boys were sworn in, and the Rev J B Dollar gave an appropriate address. Thus, the Stanwick Troop of Boy Scouts, under Scoutmaster Hudson, became an accomplished fact. Refreshments were served to the Rushden boys before they returned home.

Boy Scouts’ Fete at Rushden – Troops Inspected by Colonel Orlebar
Yesterday a garden fete was held in the grounds of Rushden Hall by the kind permission of Mr A H Sartoris, J.P., and Mrs Sartoris, the arrangements having been made by the officers of the Rushden Boy Scouts and Rovers. They were District Commissioner F E Preston, District Scoutmaster G C N Fountain, Scoutmasters B Houghton and D Winters, A.S.M. S Dungate, and Rover F Frost, the latter two taking duty at the gate.

The fete opened in fine weather in the afternoon, and business soon began at the stalls, which were managed as follow: Flowers and vegetables, Mrs Sartoris; pound and clothing, Mrs Pogson; miscellaneous, members of St Mary’s Girl Guides; confectionery, fruit, tobacco, etc., Rushden Rivers; Chinese laundry and hidden treasure, Mrs O Claridge, assisted by Mr O and Mr C Claridge; silver hoop-la, Mrs Walter Robinson and Mrs Muxlow; skittles, Rovers; putting green, Dr Greenfield and Mr Sartoris. There was also fortune telling by Madame Zeena, under the charge of Mrs O Claridge. Tea was served at small tables placed on the lawn under the supervision of Mrs R Tusting, assisted by members of the Rushden Division of the St John Ambulance Brigade.

In the evening a parade of Rushden and other local Boy Scouts, Rovers, and Wolf Cubs, under their respective officers, was formed up at the Rushden Ambulance Headquarters and, headed by the Rushden Temperance Band, marched in procession to the Hall grounds, where the companies were inspected by Lieut-Colonel R R B Orlebar, J.P., a District Commissioner for North Bedfordshire. A complimentary speech was made by the colonel to the boys.

Thanks were accorded Colonel Orlebar and Mr and Mrs Sartoris by Mr Preston.

The Wolf Cubs gave a display of drill and the Scouts formed a human pyramid on the lawn before a large and interested company.

An apology was read by Mr Sartoris from the Marquis of Northampton for his inability to attend.

Donations were given by Mrs Arthur Cave, Mrs Muriset, Mrs G S Mason, and others.

The band played selections and for dancing during the evening.

The capsule contained nothing of monetary value but held loads of interesting memorabilia, to be opened by the residing District Commissioner in 25 years time.

The capsule was sealed and witnessed by the current District Commissioner Chele Height. During the evening the scouts made teas, coffees, toasted marshmallows and roasted chestnuts for their guests.
