Wolf Cubs flock to their First Rally in Rushden

To Rushden Hall grounds on Saturday came Wolf Cubs and their leaders from all over the county, to take part in the first county rally held at Rushden.

The Rally should have been held in Rushden last year but was cancelled owing to the rail strike.  Rushden therefore had to wait until 1956 [2nd June] for its chance to entertain Wolf Cubs from the county.

The organisers, particularly Mr R.H. Brown (A.D.C.) who was responsible for the arrangements, had some anxious moments as the rain drops fell shortly before the programme was due to start, but the weather remained fine, and the programme was carried through.

Civic Welcome

Cubs taking part came from Wellingborough, Raunds, Brackley, Weedon, Towcester, Kettering, Rockingham Forest, Thrapston, Castle Ashby and Rushden.

The programme opened and closed with a “Grand Howl”, and the Cubs were welcomed to Rushden by Mr E. E. Newell, chairman of the Urban Council.  Also present was Mr T. Baxter, Assistant County Commissioner.

The County Commissioner, Capt. D. Friedberger, presented the Silver Acorn to Miss M. Furness, of Northampton, an area leader, in recognition of her services to the movement.

The programme included tea, games, a sing-song, jungle dances and plays, and closed with prayers led by the Rector of St. Mary’s, the Rev. I. E. Douglas-Jones.
