Rushden Rugby Footballers 1891

Answer To ‘Peeps’ Competition

There was keen competition for this week’s prize, and the best of several good papers come from Mr. H. Smith, 71, Glassbrook Road, Rushden, one of the players appearing in this group of Rushden Rugby footballers. Mr. Smith writes:-

The photo published in your paper this week is of the Rushden Rugby Football Club, taken by S. Powell at the Rectory Gardens, Rushden, soon after they won the Northamptonshire Rugby Challenge Cup, 1890-91.

The final for this cup was played at Franklin’s Gardens, between Rushden Town and Wolverton Town. Because no score was made it was decided to play 15 minutes each way extra time.

During the extra play S. Allen scored a beautiful try, which by the way, he almost converted, but this try was sufficient, as no further score was made, and Rushden were the victors by 3 points to nil.

The players are:- Top Row (left to right) – W. Ekins (deceased), S. Allen (Canada), F. Maddams (Rushden), H. White, linesman (deceased), G. Wooding (S. Africa), J. Bailey (Rushden), W. Brudenell (Rushden).

Middle Row – W. H. Simpson (Dublin), W. B. Evans, Capt. (deceased). C. H. Davis, div. coroner (Dallington), W. Cooke (Rushden).

Front Row – H. Parker (Rushden) J. Seabrook, Sec., Rugby Section (deceased), H. Collins (deceased), H. Smith (Rushden), and A. Robinson (Rushden).

H. Bryant, of Raunds, was expected to play, but failed to turn up and J. Seabrook was substituted after the game had been in progress 10 minutes.

After this match we were brought by brakes from Higham Old Station. The Temperance Band met us at the Hayway and played us to our Club headquarters, the Wheatsheaf Hotel, where mine host, Mr. G. Evans, filled the cup with sherry.
