THE STORY
Lionel Bart’s musical and dramatic treatment of “Oliver” with its haunting score has been described as a free adaption of Charles Dickens’ “Oliver Twist”, yet it is surprisingly loyal to this great author’s work. Fagin, Dickens’ corrupter of youth, is turned into a shamelessly lovable rogue with fine comic and relish.
As the story of Oliver’s adventures unfolds we see him with the workhouse boys and the singing of “Food Glorious Food”. Oliver, having the audacity to ask for more, arouses the wrath both of the Beadle and Widow Corney and he is promptly sold to Mr Sowerberry the undertaker. After a short apprenticeship he flees only to meet the Artful Dodger who takes him to meet Fagin and his gang of urchins in the thieves’ kitchen. While a member of Fagin’s “Academy of Youth”, Oliver meets up with Nancy who provides the show’s anguish and emotion and Bill Sykes the black hearted villain of the piece. During his expedition with Fagin’s boys a chase ensues and Oliver is apprehended. But all ends well when he winds up in the arms of the opulent Mr Brownlow who turns out to be his grandfather at the finish. |

Council Chambers,
Rushden
|
Ladies and Gentlemen,
A great many of you will know of the R.A.T.S. by their very successful pantomimes. You may not know, however, of their constant willingness to assist local charities. Even in their short history, they have donated £1,000 towards the well-being of others, in spite of the rising costs of their productions. In was, therefore, with this in mind that I asked them, as Chairman of the Council and their President for my term of office, if they would stage a show for my Charities Appeal and it was of no great surprise when they offered to present "Oliver" here at the Ritz.
I will say no more than this now - I hope you will enjoy the show, remembering its aims and the work entailed in its presentation; tell your friends and support in every way these worthy efforts to assist local charities.
Thank you very much for your kind attendances at the show.
