The Story of our Pantomime
|
Long ago there lived in the village of Much Muddle a poor widow, Dame Durden, and her sons, Jack, the hero of our story, and Simon.
The penniless Dame Durden is unable to pay the rent of her cottage, and is forced to sell her faithful cow, Buttercup, to raise enough money to stave off the Bailiff's men. Jack is given the task of selling poor Buttercup, but, alas! the Giant's henchman, the Demon, buys the cow and pays for her with a bag of "gold" pieces which turn out to be merely beans. The Demon also captures the Squire's daughter, Angelina, whom Jack loves dearly, and she is whisked off to Giantland.
Just as Jack's fortunes appear to be at their lowest ebb, the tide turns. The beans turn out to be magic ones which grow in few seconds into a magnificent beanstalk reaching right up into the sky. The brave Jack, helped by the Good Fairy, climbs the beanstalk to attck the Giant's stronghold.
After many perilous adventures Jack succeeds in reaching the Giant's castle, kills the evil monster, and rescues his beloved Angelina.
Jack now returns in triumph to Much Muddle to claim the rewards offered to anyone who could slay the Giant, namely one third of the Kingdom and the hand of Angelina in marriage.
And so our story ends, as all stories should, with everyone, including, of course, Buttercup the cow, living happily ever after.
