the story of our pantomime |
Our panto this year has a very modern approach in which the hero, Prince Nicholas, forsakes his dashing white charger for a gleaming spaceship. However, the triumph of good over evil and naturally the ‘they lived happily ever after’ ending is still assured. The royal fiddlers three, the three witches, Dame Fatimer and the King’s Jester all get embroiled in the plot whilst the handsome Prince Nicholas carries out his apparent endless search for the girl who only appears in his dreams. For those who like to hiss there are the three evil witches, who are sent to earth from Shadowland by their mysterious master. Their plan is to kidnap jolly King Cole and take him back to Shadowland for their master to marry. They succeed in their dastardly plot by taking over the bodies of the three fiddlers and whisking King Cole off on their broomstick.
Prince Nicholas and the loyal members of the Royal court pursue the fleeing witches in a spaceship. They eventually arrive at Shadowland, a weird and wonderful place inhabited only by women. There the plot thickens, but even in the midst of his anxiety for his father’s safety, Prince Nicholas cannot forget the girl of his dreams.
Where is his father being kept captive? Why has he been kidnapped? Who is the mysterious master of Shadowland? The brave prince Nicholas is to find an answer to all these questions, but little does he realise that in doing so he will accomplish both his ambitions to rescue his father and find the girl of his dreams. . . .

Our producer, Verne Morgan, has also written the pantomime, and is a well-known producer-actor, author and composer. Apart from pantomime, he has published several books and short stories as well as having many one act plays to his credit. He started writing at the age of seven, appeared in print for the first time at the age of twelve, and at fifteen was writing and singing his own songs as a professional comedian. As an actor he has appeared in a large number of West End successes, as well as many films and television plays. He first began producing musicals at the ripe old age of nineteen, and for the past fifteen years has interspersed the producing of amateur shows with his professional work. He is a pantomime specialist and for a great number of years was one of the best-known pantomime Dames on the professional stage. |

We have many new faces in the production team this year and consider ourselves most fortunate to have obtained the services of Verne Morgan, producer; Oswald Lawrence, musical director; Joan Hart, who assists him and trained the chorus; also Beryl Rowe who joined Pat Waite to train the dancers. We extend to all of them a very hearty welcome. We have enjoyed working with them throughout rehearsals and we are sure you will enjoy the results of their hard work and skill.
Welcome to all of you and thank you for your support. Enjoy yourselves and we look forward to welcoming you again to our 1968 show.
