Christine & John RATS Dick Whittington 1984
Christine and John
Welcome to you all whether you are old friends or new.  May we take this opportunity of wishing you all a very happy 1984.
This is the third time we have presented Dick Whittington and many of us were in the previous productions.  Our director, Christine Norman, was Tommy the first time we presented this panto and Dick Whittington himself on the second occasion.  A dancer in our very first panto, she is really one of us.
Our producer, John Henderson, produced Dick Whittington for us in 1975 as well as many other shows.  To us he is more than our producer he is one of our friends.
Welcome back John and Chrissie!
David Gomm played in the orchestra for many years; he was blowing his trumpet in Dick Whittington in 1975.  Now, as in our last two shows, he is our Musical Director.
Melanie Garner was one of our dancers until, as the wicked demon in one of our shows, not only did she scare the children but also scared herself off the stage while she completed her training.  Now she returns as our Choreographer.
With such a strong production team backed by our faithful friends behind the scenes we’re sure you’re in for a fabulous show.  But it is the interaction between each department and the audience that makes a good pantomime; so ‘It’s nice to see you to see you nice!’
We trust you enjoy Dick Whittington, and if you do please tell your friends.

Dick Whittington

A great philanthropist and cat lover, friend of kings and princes, lived during the reign of Henry III.  Three times he was Lord Mayor of London and many tales and legends grew up around his name; Sir Richard Whittington.
Our story tells of the arrival in London of the adventurer, Dick Whittington, with his faithful cat, Tommy.  Armed with little more than ambition he sets out to make his fortune.  He meets the beautiful Alice Fitzwarren who pleads with her father to give Dick a job.  Alderman Fitzwarren employs Dick as an apprentice in his general store.
Unfortunately, under the evil influence of the dastardly King Rat, Jack, one of the shop assistants, and a couple of seamen from Fitzwarren’s ship ‘The Saucy Sal’ plant marked money on Dick and he is branded a liar and a thief.  Shunned by all except the loyal Alice, Dick leaves London.
When all seems lost the Good Fairy takes a hand; the bells seem to tell Dick to return to London.  Taking their advice Dick returns to London and joins the crew of ‘The Saucy Sal’.  During the voyage King Rat uses his evil influence again and they are shipwrecked.  After many adventures they find themselves in Morocco where the palace is plagued with rats.  Tommy has a grand time, he chases all the rats out and after a struggle he kills King Rat.  The Sultan is no relieved that he gives Dick and Tommy a large reward.  Dick proves his innocence and returns to London to marry the fair Alice and become Lord Mayor of London for the first time.
