BABES IN THE WOOD

Welcome to our pantomime whether you are a new friend on your first visit to one of our shows or you are old friends.

In 1963 the R.A.T.S. put on their first pantomime ‘Babes in the Wood’ and now some 17 years and 19 shows later we are again performing ‘Babes in the Wood’.  Our original Babes have left us and now have babes of their own but a number of us are still left who can remember that first night wondering if our venture would be a success.  One of those who lined up with me in the chorus of that first show is now our Dame and one of the dancers is now our producer.

I welcome again our producer, Christine Norman; our musical director Elizabeth McLaughlan and our choreographer, Robina Cooper.  I would like to thank them and all the others whose untiring effort and hard work has made this panto possible.

I thank you for your continued support.  I trust you will enjoy ‘Babes in the Wood’ – and if you do – please tell your friends.

Ben C.

The Story of "Babes in the Wood"

In the days of King Richard the Lionheart, when must of England was forest, there were many rogues and robbers.  Men like Robin Hood and his band of men who had radical ideas.  They robbed the rich to help the poor and they had fun doing it.  Others like the Sheriff of Nottingham, whilst maintaining the law, robbed the townsfolk with unjust and heavy taxes to fill their own pockets.

The Sheriff of Nottingham was always broke.  He could not raise any more taxes so he arranged to have his wards, the children of his late brother, killed so that he could claim their inheritance.  The two vagabonds he employed to do the dirty deed could not bear the sight of blood so they left the babes in the forest to die.

It was there in the forest that Robin and his friend Marian, who was the babes’ nurse, found them.  On their return to Nottingham, they met King Richard.  He heard the story and made sure that both Robin and the Sheriff got the rewards they deserved.
