The Story of our Pantomime
|
Our story is set in the mysterious East in days long ago, the days of magicians and powerful Emperors.
The hero, Aladdin, lived with his old mother, Widow Twankey, in Pekin, where shoe owned the Imperial Laundry. Aladdin fell in love with the Emperor’s daughter, Princess Balroubadour, but His Majesty parted the loving couple as soon as he realised that Aladdin was penniless.
The villainous wizard, Abanazar, then came to Pekin and, pretending to be Aladdin’s long lost uncle, persuaded him to help to find some fabulous treasure which was hidden in a secret cave. Aladdin was trapped in the cave by the wicked Abanazar, but the Genie of the Magic Ring came to his rescue and transported him home laden with priceless jewels and carrying a magic lamp, which Abanazar was determined to steal.
Just as things seemed to be going Aladdin’s way he had wealth and position and the Emperor was looking more kindly on him Abanazar managed to steal the lamp by a trick, and spirited Aladdin and his beloved to the opposite ends of the earth. Once again, however, the Genie rescued Aladdin and at last he foiled the evil Abanazar and was able to marry his Balroubadour with the Emperor’s blessing.
