'Watch it Sailor'

7th, 8th, 9th April 1970

Stewart Jones outside St. Mary's Church, Rushden, last night with his bride.
He said. "I don't want to get married yet."

Evening Telegraph 1970

‘But I don’t want to marry,’ said the groom.

Bride, Pat Johnson, is engaged to another man. She just laughed.

This was a mock wedding staged by Rushden Amateur Dramatic Society in connection with its next production, “Watch It Sailor”.

They preferred this realistic wedding group photograph to taking advanced publicity shots in someone’s house.

So that was how Stewart, a 21 year old student at Kettering Technical College, and Pat, a 22 year old teacher, came to get “married”.

Stewart, of 38, Elizabeth Way, Higham Ferrers, said: “I am single and not even engaged. I want to keep it that way”.

But, Pat, of 66 Cromwell Court, Rushden said: “I got engaged three weeks ago and I am getting married at this Church this time next year. So this is a sort of preview”.

The comedy is being staged at Rushden Secondary School for Boys on April 7, 8 and 9.
