Rushden Institute Effort
Successful Garden Fete - In Aid of the Building Purchase Fund

Last evening, in spite of occasional showers, a very successful garden fete was held in the grounds of “Rosemount,” Rushden, by the kind permission of Mr. and Mrs. J. Knight, the excellent arrangements having been made by the Wellingborough-road District Committee.

Flags and bunting added to the attractiveness of the grounds. A large number visited the fete and took part in the various forms of amusement.

Stalls, etc., were as follow: Refreshments, Mesdames B. Ladds, J. Knight, E. West, S. C. Brightwell, Cox, J. Wright, W. J. Tassell, J. W. Bright, W. Tilley, C. W. Barker, W. Barker, and Miss Ladds; weighing machine and skittles board (a skittles tournament being held), Institute members: chocolate, Mrs. Dunkley and Mrs. Cox; dolls, lavender, and cushions, Miss Morris and her kindergarten scholars; soap, Mrs. Norman; ice-cream, Mr. and Mrs. E. West; tobacco, Mr. E. J. Woolston; miscellaneous, Mesdames F. Caswell, W. L. Beetenson, E. J. Woolston, Ette, and Miss Lillian Andrews; hoops and bowls, Mrs. W. Tilley; magic bowls, Mrs. W. P. Jolley and Miss Wilson.

Gipsy Lee gave palmistry readings, which were keenly sought.

The arrangements had been made by Mrs. H. S. Gates and Mrs. W. Woodward.

A well patronised whist drive had been arranged by Mrs. Brett and Mrs. R. Denton. A popular tennis tournament had been organised by Miss Doris West. Busy amongst the many patrons were Miss Morris’s pupils selling lavender bags which they had made. A competition, guessing the date of a hidden golden half-sovereign, which had been presented by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jaques, was arranged by Mrs. Jaques, and was a source of much revenue. Miss Ruby West was in charge. A number- guessing competition for a tea service was also held.
