The Proclamation of George V to the Throne

George V proclaimed as monarch 1910

The original of this photograph has been given to Rushden Museum. It was taken at the Proclamation of George V as Monarch in 1910. The proclamation was read by Fred Knight (with large sheet to right of flag pole). The proceedings took place in St Mary's churchyard with the dignitaries standing to the right of the flag pole and the Fire Brigade (Fred Knight was their Captain), to the left. A flag has been draped over the churchyard boundary wall, probably over a plank, as it looks at first glance rather like a coffin. The crowd was standing along Church Parade; at the front is a row of raised bayonets, and all the ladies are wearing their best hats.

Below is a close up from the centre of the picture.
