Gladys Palmer Prologue to The Rebel Maid
"A Romantic Light Opera" it is called, but the "book" itself, with its Devonshire setting, its lovers and courtiers, its
blue-blooded ladies and rosy-cheeked serving maids, its fishermen and soldiers, is not more romantic than the story of its origin. Two young lieutenants in a submarine wrote it to relieve the monotony of long night watches during the Great War.

Montague Phillips established himself in this work as one of the leading composers of light music, and Gerald Dodson - now the Recorder of London - left us grateful for his lively imaginative lyrics.

Produced at the, Empire Theatre, London, on March 12th, 1921, the opera had in its notable cast Thorpe Bates (as Derek Lanscombe), Clara Butterworth (in the title role) and C. Hayden Coffin. For the concert version two madrigals and a finale were added and some comedy numbers omitted.

It will not be difficult to follow the story outline .... 1688 .... an anti-Stuart plot .... the "Curlew" cutter off Torbay with Derek Lanscombe aboard, prepared to assist the landing of William Prince of Orange .... Lady Mary ashore, entrusted with a lantern signal to guide him .... plot discovered, light changed, Derek ambushed, lovers estranged .... Derek escapes, learns the truth, and all is well.
Mr. JOHN HARGREAVES
