Foreword

Fellow Townspeople,
Once again with your co-operation we have arranged to hold a United Social Services Effort., with the object of providing funds to help the lads of our town serving with His Majesty's Forces, and also for the various local charities mentioned below.

It is impossible in these times to hold anything in the nature of a carnival procession, but all the various local services, of which we may well be proud, will help to make a Grand Parade. We are indebted to every service commander and committee for so willingly giving their assistance on this occasion.

Arrangements have been completed, and all we now need is a fine day. Given this, there is no reason why our previous records should not be broken.

May I conclude with the expressed wish that all will come to the Hall Grounds some time during the proceedings, showing the same generous spirit that has always prevailed in the people of Rushden.

THE CHALLENGE

Do NOT challenge in groups. You MUST be alone. Hold in your
left hand a copy of the official programme (back page uppermost)
and say "I challenge you to be Spitfire Bill, and claim from you
the prize of a golden half-sovereign".

Here is The Clue to Spitfire Bill Number 1.

He looks quite young, he's not too old,

In all affairs he's rather bold;

His name begins twixt A and K;

With pen he's busy every day.

Here is The Clue to Spitfire Bill Number 2.

This William decorates his face,

And fills a large amount of space;

If you should meet him here to-day,

Be very careful what you say.
