Fancy Dress Ball

Fancy Dress
Miss Violet Reed — Mrs. Banks — Mrs. W. A. Fathers

In aid of the Northampton General Hospital a very pretty fancy dress ball was held at the Co-operative Hall, Rushden, on Friday last. The event was arranged by Messrs. R. Brown, S. Larum, and W. Groome, and it proved a very great success. There was a large company present and quite a generous number of fancy dresses. The Mayoress of Higham Ferrers was to have attended, but owing to unforeseen circumstances was unable to present the prizes, and she kindly sent a donation of 10s. to the fund. The judging was therefore carried out by Mr. and Mrs. F. Abbott, of Byfield, and Councillor F. D. Brazier. It was a most difficult task to undertake, but the awards were popularly ratified. The prizes were won as follow:- Mrs. Banks, of Higham Ferrers (“Grace Darling”), Miss Violet Reed, Higham Ferrers (“Weldons”), and a special prize, given by Councillor F. Twissell for the most accurate dress, was won by Mrs. W. A. Fathers, Rushden, as “an Early Victorian lady.” The gentlemen’s prizes were won by Pte. Robert Douglas, V.A.D. (as “Mrs. Wiggs”) and Mr. Frank Sudborough, Higham Ferrers (“Golliwog”). Mr. Sudborough gave his 5s. prize to the Northampton Hospital. The M.C.s duties were admirably carried out by the promoters, who also provided the prizes. The whole of the takings will be handed to the Northampton Hospital, and the promoters deserve commendation for their successful efforts for charity. The prizes were presented by Mrs. Abbott, and the music was provided by an excellent band composed of Miss Cattell (piano), Mr. C. Woods (violin), and Mr. Whitworth (cornet).
