Nearly £200 Raised

A meeting of the General Committee for Rushden was held in the Council Chamber on Friday evening, and was well attended. Mr. John Claridge, J.P., C.C., presided, supported by Mr. G. S. Mason (general secretary of the committee).

Mr. Claridge said that the meeting was called for the purpose of receiving the reports of the sub-committees and as to the estimated amount required by them.

Finances

Mr. G. S. Mason, on behalf of the Finance Committee, reported that the amount already collected was £190/2/0, and it was expected that from other sources of letting stalls, etc., to make the sum up to £200.

Children’s Tea

The Rector, for the Children’s Tea Committee, reported that they had arranged for tea to be partaken of in the various schools, and the Head Masters, with their staffs, would make necessary arrangements. The number, as nearly as they could ascertain, would be 3,000, at an estimated cost of £38.

The Old People

Mr. Claridge (Old People’s Tea Committee) reported that the Coffee Tavern Company had agreed to provide a meat tea for 1/- per head, and the probable numbers were 600.

Sports, Etc.

Mr. J. S. Mason reported that the Sports Committee had provided a programme, with prizes to the amount of £18.

Mr. W. H. Moody, (Secretary of the Entertainment Committee), said that artistes, etc., had been engaged who would give two entertainments of about two hours duration each at a cost of £15/13/0.

Mr. J. E. Smith said that the Maypole girls would attend.

Decorations, Etc.

The Combined Decoration, Procession, Illumination, Fireworks, and Bonfire Committees were reported upon by Mr. F. E. Preston and Mr. G. R. Turner. The estimated costs of the various Committees were: Fireworks £16/10/0, Bonfire £8/10/0, Decorations (six arches, including one triple arch, with decorations) £25; total £50.

The Chairman stated that the Gas Co. had offered to fit up and supply gas for illumination free of cost. (Applause.)

Mr. W. M. Hensman moved that the reports and estimates be adopted.

This was seconded by Mr. G. Miller, C.C., and agreed to unanimously.

A discussion took place as to the engagement of the Rifle or any other Band for the day, but this was referred to the Finance Committee to see if the funds would allow any further expense.

Religious Services

The Rector stated that it had been arranged to hold services at ten o’clock at the Parish Church, at St. Peter’s Church, and the Park-road Wesleyan Church. He hoped to see the members of the Rushden Urban Council present at the Parish Church.

Mr. G. Miller asked if the church bells could be rung.

The Rector: Certainly, I don’t think ringing them on that occasion will bring the tower down.

This old poster was found when the office of the Chief Executive of East Northants District Council,
Mr Derek Adnit, moved from the Council Buildings to Rushden Hall. It is now hanging in the North Hall by the staircase which was restored at the same time to give access to the first floor.
