Rushden Open Field Orders


Having scattered unfenced holdings meant problems with animals straying and encroachments by neighbour upon neighbour. Such offences were regulated by court orders. Eventually comprehensive lists of orders were included in the record of the manorial court proceedings. Those for 1576 are shown below.

Rushden Paines made there the 24th April Elizabeth [1576]
1 First it is agreed that evere housholder in the southe end of the Town there shall fynd on[e] laborer on[e] day from 8 of the clock until 4 to mend the dyche in bencraft before hoxe Tuesday next upon payne of everyone to be awaye to forfet 3s 4d
2 Item that every housholder in the northe end of the towne shall fyndone laborer to scoure the moores before hoxe Tuesday next upon payne of every on that ys away to forfet 3s 4d
3 Item that Thomas Barry, William Brasbridge, William Marget, Thomas Bates, shall scoure theire dyches at mansbridge before whitsonday next upon payne of 20s  
4 Item that the Reve shall scoure sinmedo brocke so fare as the quenes medo goeth before whitsonday next 20s  
5 Item that W. Payne of Podington gent shall scoure the diche in so far as his ground doth goe before whitsonday 20s  
6 Item it is agreed that no man shall torn their horses nor stake them nor no manner of cattle in the medo after yt is mone before saint luke without the common consent of the inhabitants upon payne 10s  
7 Item that no shepe shall be kept in bencraft nor turned thether without consent before saint marke next 10s  
8 Item that no shepe shalbe kept in the several fields but that daye they shere and that daye they wash 10s  
9 Item that all the hadons & common grounds within the bounds of Rushden shalbe lotted before the ascencion daye next & no man shall stake in before yt be lotted upon 10s  
10 Item that no shepe drivers shall kepe any shepe in the felds theire havinge no commons upon payne 10s  
11 Item that no cotter shall kepe any petty heard w.t. In the several fields but put them before the common hearde 3s 4d
12 Item that no man shall stake another mans grass ground neither brake it nor grass before lamas next 6s 8d
13 Item that every man shall make their fence lawfull betwixt neighbour before assencion day next 6s 8d
14 Item that no person shall nether mowe grasse upon any common balke nether gether any mans land there before harvest be done upon payne 10s
