New Vestry Hall 1875
A bundle of documents tied together - Quotes and Receipted Bills
for the building of the Vestry Hall in 1874/75

The Vestry Hall and Church area Newton Road
Newton Road & the Church c1900
The open ground used for the Library in 1902 & RUDC offices in 1906
Above: boundary wall and steps to the Vestry Hall
Below: c1910 Vestry Hall behind the van
Above: c1900 Behind the horse and cart (centre) in this early hand coloured postcard is the gable end of a cottage. The brown roof beyond left is the Vestry Hall. The three girls are standing at the junction of Newton Road and Back Way (renamed Rectory Road). The open ground is where our beautiful Library and RUDC offices stand, the cottage being pulled down when Ashford & Campion built their factory. That factory was to be taken on by John White in 1919, and when he expanded into Park Place, the cottages left of picture were demolished (about 1923). The buildings on the right can still be recognised today - Sarah's Barber shop on the corner. Above right: c1906 looking up towards the Fire Station, see the tower. The cottage, with library and RUDC buildings newly erected.
Right: c1910 The new Library and RUDC buildings, with the Vestry Hall beyond the factory of Ashford & Campion.
c 1910
A hand coloured postcard mistakenly has the
Vestry hall in red for brick - it is a stone building!

Note: In the final account below Albert Laughton was only paid £20 although his contract was for £22, but he did not put in the stove at £1 10 0
so perhaps an invoice is missing, lost from the bundle?

Fire Insurance Policy
The Insurance Policy is dated November 1875

The Vestry Hall
The village meetings were held in the earlier Vestry Hall, and a school was also started here. In 1871 the church built a new school - South End School, and the vestry hall (detailed above) was built in 1875. This was replaced in 1905, and in 1912 when St Peter's Church held a Bazaar, hoping to pay off the outstanding £400 debt on their own church, and £330 for the Vestry Hall.

The Urban Council met in the Vestry Hall until their own premises were built nearby in 1906.

 The Vestry Hall in 2011

A large extension was added in 1982.

Today it is used for many church events such as badminton, meetings and coffee mornings.

It is also let out for private functions.

The kitchen was refurbished in 2010.

The Church Office was moved into the Vestry Hall in 2013.
