Statistics - Employment

Rushden Echo & Argus, 8th January 1932, transcribed by Kay Collins

Unemployment in Rushden & Higham
Comparison with a Year Ago – Striking Decrease in Both Sections
We are able to publish the following figures relating to unemployment (both wholly unemployed and temporarily suspended) in Rushden and Higham Ferrers, for the week ending January 5th, this year, and also to give a comparison with the totals for the same week of last year.

In all cases but one the figures show a decrease compared with a year ago, and the totals are considerably below those of 1931, a fact which is extremely gratifying.

The tables are as follows:

Rushden Echo & Argus, 29th April 1955, transcribed by Kay Collins

Rushden Has Ten Out of Work
The number of employed persons in Rushden is approximately 11,000 of whom 7,000 are men. Of these, 4,200 men and 3,200 women are boot and shoe operatives.

Most recent unemployment figure is six men and four women, of whom one man and two women are boot and shoe operatives. Rushden has not suffered a drop in the number of persons employed in the boot industry.

The only new industry is factory opened by a small firm of coach builders.
