Parking matters..........

The Rushden Echo, 28th May 1965, transcribed by Jim Hollis

‘No Waiting’ Objections To Council

Objections are being made to Rushden Urban Council’s proposals for unilateral prohibition of waiting in Denmark Road, Essex Road, Roberts Street and York Road.

The Highways and Planning Committee told Wednesday’s council meeting that 27 residents in York Road, 35 in Roberts Street and Rushden Ratepayers and Tenants’ Associations have lodged objections with the County Council.

The ratepayers’ association claims that the proposals would cause considerable inconvenience to the residents in the streets, and would serve no useful purpose.

No Difficulties

Residents in York Road pointed out that no difficulties are experienced at the moment. Only residents and friends used the road for parking, and it was thought it would be a waste of money to provide and maintain the necessary signs.

Roberts Street residents objected on similar grounds, adding that it would be almost impossible to park a car in the street without putting it outside somebody’s front door.

The committee reports that the object of the proposals was to regulate in a proper manner the increase in parking, which will inevitably result from the introduction of the approved restrictions on waiting in Griffith Street, the reduction of the parking area in Rectory Road, and the restriction of waiting periods for off-street parking places in Rectory Road.

At The Outset

The committee felt that it would be better to impose restrictions at the outset. This would prohibit waiting on one side of each of the roads concerned on a unilateral basis, rather than allow indiscriminate parking to develop which would cause an annoyance to residents and obstruction to traffic – as happened in Griffith Street.

The Clerk Mr. A. G. Crowdy, was instructed to tell the County Council, and to say that there was no reason to suppose the council would depart from the representations previously made about the need for the proposed restrictions.
