Mr. Joseph Allen’s Election

The Rushden Echo, 8th January, 1926

Rushden Urban District Council
The New Member’s Many Activities

Mr. Joseph Allen, the newly elected member of the Rushden Urban Council, was born at Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, a son of Mr. Robert Allen, builder.  Mr. J. Allen started in the teaching career at Croydon, and afterwards held a teaching appointment in Finchley before coming to Rushden.

Mr. Allen was appointed a teacher at the Alfred-street Council School on November 1st, 1905, and when the North-End School was built he went there, where he remained until, on the opening of the Intermediate School in the North-End School premises, Mr. Allen transferred to the Newton-road School.

During the time he has been in Rushden Mr. Allen has been a member of the Rushden Liberal Association, being vice-chairman in 1914 and secretary for the year 1919, and a member of the committee for a good many years.  Mr. Allen was a nominee of the Liberal Association at the Rushden Urban Council election last March, and, being the next on the list below the successful candidates, he was nominated by the association again on a vacancy being caused by the death of Mr. C. E. Bayes.  The Conservative and Labour Parties did not put forward candidates, and, as there were no “independent” nominees, Mr. Allen was elected unopposed.

Other organisations to which Mr. Allen belongs or on which he has served are the Park-road Baptist Choir (of which he is treasurer) and the Baptist Recreation Club.  An ex-Serviceman (with three-and-a-half years’ service, being discharged through wounds received at Amiens), Mr. Allen has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Rushden branch of the British Legion since the formation of the branch.  He was appointed treasurer of the local United Services Fund, and when the committee endowed beds at the Lowestoft Home Mr. Allen was made one of the trustees.  Representing the British Legion, Mr. Allen has attended several national conferences.  A keen member of the Rushden branch of the League of Nations Union, Mr. Allen has frequently addressed public meetings in advocacy of the League.

A highly valued member of the Rushden Association of the National Union of Teachers, Mr. Allen has been the secretary since its formation in 1919, a tribute to his popularity and efficiency.  He has taken the keenest interest since its beginnings in the local elementary schools football league, and he generally gives up his Saturday mornings in the season to the lads.

Councillor Allen has splendid qualifications for fulfilling the duties of his new post, and he has the backing and hearty good wishes of all sections.  We associate ourselves with the congratulations of all his friends.
