Rushden Council Building Notices - Plans Passed by Rushden Parochial Sanitary Committee (later RUDC)

Council Plans - mainpage

The plans are filed in date order, so they give us an insight into the development of our town. Sometimes the application was made by the builder contracted to a company or individual, but more often the company made the application, having employed the services of a draughtsman. Builders would buy a plot of land and make application to erect a house, or a pair of houses and as he increased his capital, so the number of houses on each application increased and even whole streets were eventually built by one builder. He in turn perhaps employed several smaller building companies or men with experience in a particular field.

The applications appear to have been passed just a few days after they were handed in.

KEY : Some envelopes are empty ~, some are missing ---.
A few are in a very poor state and are marked ^ in this list. (unable to unfold for inspection)
Only a few of the early documents have a date but it appears they were filed in date order.
Numbers on some envelopes have been used twice so I have added a "D" to the duplicates.
Most of the early plans are on tracing paper which has gone brittle with age, but by 1912 many were on linen.
Most envelopes have the details of property & street and some have the name of the owner or builder on the outer.
A few envelopes did not contain what is written on the outer but this is noted in the listing.

The Rushden Echo and Argus, 10th January 1941, transcribed by Gill Hollis

Year’s Building

The Surveyor reported that during 1940 plans were passed for one bungalow, seven additions to houses, seven additions to factories, a cowhouse, an electric sub-station, 11 garages, 10 air raid shelters and eight other buildings, chiefly sheds.

Nineteen houses were certified as completed and 14 were in course of construction, the majority being only at ground level. [Part of a longer article]
