Council Housing - Trafford Road

The Rushden Echo, 3rd September, 1920

Rushden’s Housing Scheme - Better Prospect With The Erection

It is satisfactory to note that much more rapid progress is now being made with the erection of houses under the Rushden Urban Council’s scheme.  A description of the houses has already appeared in the “Rushden Echo.”  Several new contractors have started work, and satisfactory advance has been made.

Of the 24 houses in Trafford-road, the contractor for which is Mr. Fisher, of Northampton, four are nearly finished and twelve are nearing completion, but the other eight are only yet in the foundation stage.

Mr. Robert Marriott is putting up 18 cottages on the Newton-road plot, and Mr. William Packwood has started on a dozen, and good headway is being shown.  Mr. Henson, of Wellingborough, who has a contract for 24, has not yet been able to make a start, but expects shortly to be able to do so.

The supply of bricks has improved, but there is a great scarcity of labour.  The shortage of slate, too, for the roofing, has been a cause of delay.  We are glad to learn that it is not intended to remove the trees from the Newton-road avenue.

We understand that about 300 applications have been made by would be tenants.
