Historians have marked a milestone in the history of cinema in Rushden.

A Cinema 100 plaque, to commemorate the site of the former Palace Cinema, was unveiled in Rushden High Street.

The ceremony, organised by Rushden & District History Society, coincided almost to the day to the opening of The Palace on September 19, 1910.

Local historian Eric Fowell, who has compiled books about the history of the town, spoke of the cinema's popularity in its heyday.

He said records showed that some enthusiasts were so keen that they even stood through favourite films of the day. He said: "There are records to show that on the opening day 645 people attended the first house, and the second house attracted 746.
