Tree Planting Ceremony

Madge Bates at the tree planting ceremony

Friends, family and fans of H E Bates gathered in Rushden on Saturday to mark what would have been the 90th birthday of the writer. The commemoration, organised by the Rushden & District History Society, was attended by the writer's widow Madge Bates.

Bates, whose work includes the much-loved Darling Buds of May, was born in and still has relatives living in, the Northamptonshire area.

The history society paid tribute to the writer by planting a tree in his name on the grounds of the Pemberton Centre, on H E Bates Way.

Pictured at the tree planting ceremony were Greville Watson, chairman of the Rushden & District History Society, Madge Bates, and Peter Eads.
