1993


January 1993

A trailer containing £30,000 worth of carpets was stolen from Norris Way.

The 2nd Rushden St.Mary’s Guides celebrated their 70th Anniversary.

Rushden born, Mr Brian Pratt, became President of the Wesleyan Reform Union.

February 1993

Mrs Frances “Gutty” Gutteridge celebrated her 10th birthday.  She had lived most of her life in Newton Road and was a devoted member of Park Road Baptist Church.

Rushden Mission Band recorded a tape of some of their favourite repertoire and planned to sell copies for charity.

March 1993

A chain letter circulating in Rushden invited readers to send £5 to each of 4 people listed.  In return they “could” receive £4 million pounds!

Children at Alfred Street School presented a cheque for £1,000 to Leukaemia Research.  They had raised the money in memory of a fellow pupil who had died from the disease.

The Chairman of the Rushden Branch, Royal British Legion, was seeking information on First World War hero, Lt.Col.Vann, who was born in Rushden on 9th July 1887.

Roy Blenco published his book of memories, “Rushden, My Rushden”.

April 1993

John Denton, Managing Director of DB Shoes, retired after more than 40 years with the firm.

A new Council Tax replaced the very unpopular Community Charge (Poll Tax) introduced by the Conservative, Thatcher Government.

Nearly fifty German visitors from Nochern had been staying at the Arkwright Centre, Knuston.  Their band performed in Rushden High Street.

‘Serve’ Volunteer Centre received the gift of a computer from Rushden Round Table.

May 1993

In the local elections, Labour gained control of Northamptonshire County Council.  With the Labour gain of Rushden South, all Rushden County Councillors now represented the Labour Party.

Raiders broke into the Salvation Army Centre in Church Street, Rushden.  They hacked brickwork from a chimney-breast to remove a safe which contained cash and documents, including the Marriage Register.

The closure was announced of Rushden’s Gas Showroom.

East Northants District Council agreed to sell their unoccupied council houses to Rockingham Forest Housing Association.

June 1993

Serve’s twice weekly craft days for the disabled moved into the disused Crane Ward at Rushden Hospital.

Northampton Fire Service was looking for more part-time firemen in Rushden.

A new mobile ear, nose and throat unit, equipped at a cost of £45,000, now attended Rushden Memorial Hospital once a week.

Majors David and Rita Jepson arrived to take command at the Rushden Salvation Army Centre.

July 1993

Three new housing projects were announced to provide 36 homes for rent in Rushden and would cost more than £1 million.

Rushden St.Cecilia Singers celebrated their Golden Jubilee.

Roger Pope, Treasurer of East Northants District Council and former Treasurer of Rushden Urban District Council and Higham Ferrers and Rushden Water Board, retired.

August 1993

Rushden WRVS purchased a minibus with the help of a legacy under the will of Doris Smith.

The Evening Telegraph helped to re-establish contact between Peter Minney of Rushden and Richard Cooper of Bourne who was an evacuee in World War II and stayed with Mr.Minney’s family.

Rushden School reported significant increases in the number of pupils achieving five or more Grades A to C in the GCSE Examinations.

September 1993

A display by Rushden & District History Society won first place in a competition at the Great Houghton Steam Fair.

Eric Fowell, local historian, published Volume 2 of a ‘Pictorial View of Old Rushden’.

100 years old Alice Cutt took her first flight in a four-seater aircraft from Sywell aerodrome.

October 1993

The Rushden, Higham Ferrers and Raunds Methodist Circuit celebrated its 200th Anniversary.

WPC Penny Griffiths, who had patrolled in the Rushden area, became the county’s first Community Watch Liaison Officer.

November 1993

A group of children from Newton Road Junior School visited the Evening Telegraph in Kettering to see how a newspaper was put together.

Rushden Area Christian Youth organised an all-night party which raised £1,600 for the Shaftesbury Society.  The party finished with an early morning service led by the Minister of Park Road Baptist Church.

Couincillor Mrs Maye Dicks opened the household waste recycling centre on Northampton Road.

December 1993

The Rushden Community Project (The Pemberton Centre) was launched.

The Rotary Club of Rushden sent two lorry loads of humanitarian supplies to the Yugoslavian Relief Appeal.
