The new classification covers the area of land surrounded by the moat at Higham Park, off Avenue Road.

The hunting lodge (right) and a small settlement originally stood on the site when the park was used to provide food and timber for Higham Castle.

Two years ago, the 17th century Higham Park farmhouse was included in the statutory list of buildings of special architectural or historical interest, following requests from county councillor Dr. Paul Wix.

He said: "After the land changed hands a few years ago, I was concerned that somebody might level off the site and fill in the moats. But the new owners have been very helpful and, in fact, tidied part of the area and improved two sides of the moat."

Dr. Wix, who is also a member of the Rushden Rambling and Environmental Group, is now hoping the group will produce a descriptive leaflet for visitors, when the site is signposted.
