Health Reports & Sanitary Reports
Council Breeze at Rushden

COMMENT on a Health Committee meeting by its chairman drew reproof from Councillor J. Allen at Rushden Urban Council’s meeting on Wednesday.

Coun. H. Waring, in presenting the committee’s report, said that nearly threequarters of the meat condemned locally last month was condemned because it was tuberculous.

He thought that more care might have been taken in labelling the animals, which, he understood, sometimes shook off the discs. It was very disturbing to find that after tuberculous cows had given milk the carcases should go on to be eaten.

“I raised the question in committee,” continued Mr. Waring, “in the hope that I should get support for tests to be made for T.B. milk, but so far it has not been dealt with.”

Mr. Waring also spoke of the new Clean Food Guild and its concern for a higher standard of hygiene in the handling of food. He urged that the Council should adopt the model by-laws and so keep the food traders “on their toes.”

‘Difficult’

Coun. Allen : I gathered that Mr. Waring said he did not get much support from the committee on clean milk. It seems to me rather difficult to understand.

Coun. Waring : I tried to explain that it would be of benefit to the public if in addition to the present tests we paid extra to have the milk examined for the presence of the tubercule bacillus, but there was no seconder.

Coun. Allen : There was no proposition before the committee, and I think it is a slur on the other members to say that we did not support when we had no resolution to support. I think other members of the committee are as publicly minded with regard to public health as Mr. Waring is.

Coun. Waring : If I have said anything that can be regarded as a slur, I withdraw it completely.
