1937 There were 3 hospitals in the town:

The Cottage Hospital with 2 beds, and one nurse, used for minor cases.

The Small-pox Hospital with 2 wards each capable of accommodationg 12 beds. The resident caretaker kept the buildings in excellent condition but there were no cases.

The Sanatorium under the County Council. A new block for female patients had been built and a new treatment centre was under construction. The wooden huts were gradually being replaced by brick buildings.

Maternity services were provided by one midwife and the two district nurses, both with mid-wives' certificates.


1937 The Sanitary Inspector made 486 visits to food premises.
