St John Ambulance Brigade

Rushden Echo, 12th April 1918, transcribed by Kay Collins

Rushden Ambulance Success
Sergeant Prigmore’s Team – Win the Miller Cup

A splendid success was gained by a team of men from the Rushden Corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade on Saturday in the competition held at Wellingboro' for the Miller Cup. Five teams competed, viz., four from the headquarters at Wellingborough and one from Rushden. The latter team comprised Ptes. G. Timpson, Wm. Partridge, Archie Ablett, and H. Maddams, in charge of 1st Class Sergt. Prigmore.

The competition was held in the Central Hall, and the judges were Dr. Audland (Wellingborough), Dr. Talbot (Kettering), and Superintendent J. C. Parker (Wellingborough). The task set the competitors consisted of the answering of questions on ambulance work, and of the carrying out of a test in rendering first aid, which the Rushden team, in spite of a very complicated test, carried out with remarkable intelligence and expedition.

Dr. Talbot, in giving his decision regarding the work he had inspected, and in awarding Rushden the cup, highly commended the winners, and said that they were far in front of the other competitors, both as regards knowledge of their work and in the treatment of the “patient.”

The cup was handed to 1st Class Sergt Prigmore, who suitably acknowledged the impartiality and fairness of the adjudicators. This is the second time Rushden has been successful in obtaining the cup which they have held since 1914.
