Report 1948 - 1954 [Extract]

RUSHDEN HOUSE SANATORIUM

TUBERCULOSIS & CHEST HOSPITAL

The Sanatorium, comprising 80 beds for the treatment of respiratory tuberculosis, was transferred to the Hospital Management Committee at the appointed day.  It was originally purchased by the Northamptonshire County Council in the early 1920s and a major rebuilding programme was developed during the middle 1930s and completed in the early stages of the last war.  The rebuilding consisted of replacement of wooden hutments by modern one-storey brick-built wards for the patients.  In addition, a Treatment Block and Administrative offices were included and the Sanatorium was transferred to the Management Committee in very good condition.  Most beneficial treatment has been given over the years.

Since the Hospital Management Committee assumed control, two cottages have been built in the grounds for the Gardens Superintendent and the Stoker.

Treatment in the Sanatorium consists mainly of bed rest, exercise, chemotherapy and refill treatment and a modern X‑ray apparatus is installed in the Treatment Block.  Patients requiring major surgery are transferred to Creaton Sanatorium and Peppard Chest Hospital.

Voluntary assistance in occupational therapy and library administration is given freely by local ladies and the County Voluntary Care Committees maintain their interest in the patients during their residence by visits, gifts and concerts.
