Will of John Hewes

or Howes alias Shurleye


This will is included since it appears to relate to Rushden and it is linked to Rushden in a printed index of PCC wills. However, the name of the vicar of Rushden at the time was not as suggested in the will.

7th June 1570, I John Hewes alias Shirleye being sick in body but in perfect memory make this my last will and testament. First I commit my soul into the hand of almighty God etc. I give unto Sebell my wife my whole rights and title of my farme at Risheden in the county of Northampton and also I give unto my wife all my goods and chattels moveable and immovable whatsoever they be in Risheden aforesaid (quick) and dead as corne and cattle, cart and plough and their appurtenances both within and without whatsoever they be in Risheden. Moreover I give unto Sibell my wife certain things in an inventory named and indented the which remains in the hands of Sibill my wife. I give unto Joan Yonge my daughter in law one cupboard French panel with certain dents upon the same. I ordain and make solely my true and lawful executrix Sibell my wife to order and prove this my last will and testament according to my true meaning herein mentioned. Witness hereof William Fayreclyff vicar of the same town, Lawrence Faureclyf clerk, Edmond Yonge, Thomas Cowper with others.

Probate granted 24th June 1571 to Sibelle the executrix
