William Gurrey - will 1598


Note: there are two William Gurrey wills proved in the same year

The 14th day of April 1598 I William Gurrey of Rushden husbandman being sick in body but of good and perfect memory make this my last testament containing my last will as follows. I give my soul to almighty God. I give to the church of Rushden 12 pence. I give to my son John Gurrey 5 (pounds) to be paid to him within five years of my decease and my will is that my son John Gurrey shall have Stories* house during his natural life and shall pay yearly unto my son Thomas for the same (3 shillings and 4 pence) and after the decease of the said John the same house shall returne to my son Thomas and his heirs forever. I give to my son Christopher Gurrey ten pounds of lawful English money to be paid to him within six years after my decease also I give unto the same Christopher one yearling cowbullock to be delivered unto him when it is with calf. I give to Margery my daughter 5 (pounds) of lawful English money to be paid to her at the day of her marriage or at the age of thirty years. I give unto the same Margerie my cupboard. I give to Katherine my wife all my household stuff within my houses excepting … also my will is that my son Thomas shall find my wife meat, drink and apparel and all things necessary for her finding during her natural life keeping herself widow. Also I give to her two beasts for that my son Thomas shall have the milk of the same beasts towards her finding but she shall have the calves that they bring to use as she thinks good. Also I give unto the said Katherine my wife three acres of land during her natural life that is to say in every field one acre and if … My will is that my son Thomas shall dress the same land for my wife during her life … and carry the crops of the same land to her house when it is made ready for the …. Also my will is that if God calls (my) son Thomas by death before Katherine my wife so then my will is that Katherine my wife shall have after his decease twelve acres of land that is to say in every field four acres and four swathes of meadow and Stories house during her natural life. The rest of my goods and chattels I give to Thomas my son whom I make my executor of this my last will and testament to see my debts paid and all other legacies and expenses discharged. Witness to the same Richard Dobbes, John Gurrey, Thomas (Smyth) Oliver (Latimer).

*Presumably a house owned by the testator occupied at the time my someone called Story.
