Robert Tansley - Will 1680
In the name of God Amen December the second oneThousand six hundred & eighty. I Robert Tanseley of Rushden in the County of Northton laborer being sick & weake of body butt of p’fect sense & remembrance God be praised doe make & ordaine this my last will & testament in manner & forme following first I bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God my maker hopeing asueredly through the meritorious death & suffering of my Lord and saviour Jesus Christ to receive free pardon & remission of all my sinns & life everlasting and my body I committ to the earth to be buried in Christian buriall according unto the discression of my executor hereafter named and as for that small portion of worldly goods wherewith itt hath pleased God as an unworthy Steward to entrust me I give thereof as followeth……………………

Impr. I doe hereby give & bequeath unto my eldest brother John Tanseley the sume of twelve pence to be payed unto him the said John by my Executor hereafter named within one month on my decease……......

Allsoe I doe hereby give & bequeath unto my brother Thomas TanseleyThe like sume of twelve pence to be payed unto him by my executor within one month after my decease………………

Allsoe I doe hereby give & bequeath unto my brother Anthonye Tanseley the like sume of twelve pence to be payed unto him by my Executor within one month after my decease.

Allsoe all the rest of my moveable goods Chattels & Cattell whatsoever I doe hereby give & bequeath unto my brother James Tanseley whom I make sole Executor of this my last will and testament and I doe hereby revoke all former wills by me att any time heretofore made. In witness whereof I the said Robert Tanseley have hereunto sett my hand & seale the day and year first above written.

Note: The surname of Robert is consistently spelt Tanseley in the will but Transeley for his mark! The name is recorded as Tansley in the index. This man is not buried at St Mary’s Church.

Editor’s note: The surname Tansley is more common in the north of the county – it is possible that the parish is really Rushton.
