It is almost a census of the town during a time of much change. The shoetrade was still drawing in workers from the villages where work opportunities were declining.

Emigration was also increasing with adverts in local newspapers offering farms in Australia, and relatives who had already left, were writing back to encourage other family members to go to America and Canada.
