Post Office Directory - 1864
Published by Kelly and Co., of Temple Bar, London

RUSHDEN may be considered as an appendage of Higham Ferrers, from which it is distant one mile, but it forms a distinct parish; it is in the union and county court district of Wellingborough, hundred and rural deanery of Higham Ferrers, archdeaconry of Northampton, and diocese of Peterborough. Rushden is a large place, and stands high: it is named in Doomsday Book, and was a seat of the Dukes of Lancaster. The inhabitants are chiefly employed in hoot and shoe making. The church, formerly colle¬giate, is named after the Virgin Mary, and consists of a nave, north and south aisles, north and south transepts, choir, and three porches; it has a fine tower, and crocketed spire nearly 200 feet high, and containing a peal of 6 bells; there is some carved screen work, three sedilia, stained glass, a carved seat, and other relics of ancient art; there are tombs of the families of Pemberton, Ekins, Fletcher and Williams. The living is a rectory, value £350 per annum, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor; the rector is the Rev. George Edward Downe, M.A., of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The land belonging to the living was valued four years since, to be let on a fourteen years' lease at £428. There is a small chapel for Wesleyans, and three for Baptists.

There are some peculiar customs as to ringing bells on Shrove Tuesday and at seed-time. There are several charities; May’s Charity of £25, the proceeds of a piece of land, distributed on May-day; Latham's Charity of £3, distributed in sums of 10s. each to six persons who have been unfortunate; and one called Bull money, of £3 per annum. F. U. Sartoris, Esq., Mrs. Hill, Nicholas Fisher, Esq., and Mr. Michael Mason are landowners. The Queen is lady of the manor. The population in 1861 was 1,748; the area is about 3,680. Parish Clerk, William Packwood
