The directory was compiled by A T P Phillipson, printer, and is almost a census of the town. House numbers had been introduced in the late 1890s, when the roads were numbered starting from the end nearest to the parish church and odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right hand side of the road. (A few closes were numbered consecutively.) The Phillipson's states which end of the street he started the listing so where no umbers are given, a fair idea of which property can be made by counting the properties.
