Kay & John Collins 2006
Melville & Co 1861

Rushden is an extensive village and parish, distant about three-quarters of a mile from Higham Ferrers. The population in 1851 was 1,400, and the number of acres about 3,680. The manufacture of boots and shoes is carried on here to a considerable extent. Rushden Hall is an ancient mansion, pleasantly situated, and is in the Elizabethan style; here is shown the lantern supposed to belong to Guy Faux. The Church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Is a very fine structure, and consists of nave, transepts, aisles, choir, and three porches, with a tower, containing a peal of six bells, and a handsome spire, about 200 feet high; in the interior are several ancient monuments to the Ekins, Fletcher, and Pemberton families; the church was, at one time, collegiate. The living is a rectory, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor; the present incumbent is the Rev. George Edward Downe, M.A. The Wesleyans and Baptists have chapels here.
