Badger Licences

1694 - 1709 + 1740 - 1743

1743 - 1751 + 1752 - 1772

Badgers licences were granted at the Quarter Sessions

There are 4 volumes of these books listing all persons granted a licence. The first volume gives the applicant's name, his home parish and the trade for which the licence is granted. Trades are carrier, jobber, maltster, oatmealman, higgler, drover, or badger. In the other volumes the licence applicants are listed as being bonded for £40 and two persons standing surety for them in the sum of £10. In 1765 the bonds are reduced to £10 and sureties to £5. Copies of  some licences are loose in Vol 4. Some Additional entries can be found in the Quarter Sessions Minute book index for 1708 - 1728.

Following is a transcript from the first page of the 1743. At the end of the volume details of the different wording for each licence are as follows:-

Badger - Badger, Lader, Kidder, buyer & seller of all manner of corn or grain.
